Theta, Scotty

Hypnosis research indicates that there are two conceptual paths to trance, which is understood as theta waves in the brain. The classic approach is jumping on the bandwagon of sleep - use physical and mental relaxation, which is essentially the path of boredom. The other, less practiced, since it involves so much more effort, is the path of exhaustion - overwhelming the individual physically and/or mentally.

Why these diametrically opposite strategies can induce the same state in the brain is answered once we recognize that trance is a state of disassociation, which occurs when some parts or functions of the brain give way to others. I hypothesize that the function that gives way is extraspection, consideration of the outside world, the sensory data. Taken this interpretation, we see that both boredom and overwhelming achieve the same thing - focus is turned inwards either to find something exciting or comforting.

Trance is a state of going back to the source.

So, yeah, if you are like me in that you cannot seem to ever get bored by the outside world and thus are never able to use meditation or relaxation techniques to enter trance, I encourage you to try the opposite strategy - overwhelm yourself with detail. I find that listening to progressive rock is strangely relaxing to me. It is as if the delicious copious amount of sonic detail just makes my brain go: "It's so awesome, but fuck it, I can't be bothered to follow."

Try:
  1. Animals as Leaders' self titled album
  2. Dream Theater's Scenes from a Memory
  3. Industrial artists like Feindflug, Iszoloscope, Synapscape, Hypnoskull etc.
